GitHub Copilot Virtual Card Payment Guide

GitHub Copilot can be paid for with a virtual card, but the words “virtual card” alone do not tell you very much.

Payment systems care more about the issuer, card type, billing address, and debit permissions. A bank credit card with no physical counterpart can be just as stable as a conventional credit card; another Visa virtual card that looks almost identical may be identified as a prepaid card and rejected once additional usage is enabled.

A virtual card suitable for a long-term Copilot subscription usually has the following characteristics:

  • It is a credit card or bank debit card accepted by GitHub;

  • It supports international online transactions and recurring charges;

  • It has a real, verifiable billing address;

  • The card number remains usable over time and is not single-use;

  • The available balance can cover the plan price, taxes, and temporary authorizations.

Prepaid cards require particular caution. GitHub explicitly states that prepaid credit cards and prepaid debit cards are not valid payment methods for usage-based billing. Starting in June 2026, Copilot personal plans use an AI Credits usage-billing model. Some crypto cards may be able to pay the fixed monthly fee yet still fail when charges for usage beyond the included allowance are attempted.

Verifiable statements in this article about GitHub Copilot plans, payment methods, billing information, and additional-usage budgets are based on the listed official or regulatory documents. Actual service status, pricing, eligibility, and regional availability should be confirmed on the issuer’s or platform’s current page at the time of application.

Different issuers, regions, account tiers, and merchant rules can produce different outcomes. Experiences, success rates, fee comparisons, or trend judgments not directly disclosed by the primary sources above are analysis or inference and have not been officially confirmed by the relevant institutions for individual cases.

1. How are GitHub Copilot personal plans priced?

GitHub currently offers three paid personal plans:

Plan

Official monthly price

AI Credits included per month

Best for

Copilot Pro

$10

1,500

Everyday code completion, Chat, and light Agent use

Copilot Pro+

$39

7,000

Developers who need more advanced models and Agent usage

Copilot Max

$100

20,000

Individual users who use Copilot intensively for long periods

Refer to GitHub’s Copilot personal-plan documentation for current prices and allowances.

GitHub prices 1 AI Credit at $0.01. After the included allowance is exhausted, users can stop using the related paid features or enable additional usage and set a budget.

Two dates are easy to confuse.

The plan renewal date is usually the date on which the paid plan was activated. For example, if you subscribe on August 15, the next renewal will usually be around September 15.

AI Credits reset at 00:00 UTC on the first day of each month, which does not necessarily match the plan renewal date. Older annual plans may temporarily remain under previous rules; new subscribers should follow the current checkout page and GitHub’s latest plan page.

2. What kind of virtual card is better for Copilot?

First check whether it is prepaid

This is the first thing worth verifying.

GitHub’s payment-method documentation explicitly states that usage-based billing does not accept a prepaid credit card or prepaid debit card.

Therefore, a Visa or Mastercard logo on the card does not prove that it meets the requirements. Two Visa virtual cards may look the same, yet one may be a bank credit card and the other a prepaid card, producing very different payment results.

The card type is best confirmed in the issuer’s app, cardholder agreement, or through official customer support. Third-party BIN lookup tools can be used as a reference, but their databases may be outdated and may not distinguish different card programs under the same BIN.

Support for international online transactions and recurring charges

Copilot is an auto-renewing service. The payment card should allow:

  • Online or E-commerce Payment;

  • International Payment;

  • Recurring Payment or Subscription;

  • 3D Secure, SMS, or issuer-app verification.

Single-use virtual cards, Disposable Cards that automatically change the card number after a transaction, and gift cards limited to one-off purchases are not suitable for linking to Copilot.

The billing address must be genuine

The name, country, street address, and postal code entered at checkout should match the information held by the card issuer.

Do not arbitrarily combine the GitHub account region, network exit location, and card billing address, and do not copy an address from a BIN lookup website. If the information has no reasonable relationship, it can trigger payment risk controls at the issuer, acquirer, or GitHub.

The balance should cover more than the plan price

When adding a payment method or checking out, GitHub may first place a temporary authorization. This is not the actual subscription charge and is normally released by the issuer after verification.

If you subscribe to Copilot Pro, do not keep exactly $10 on the card. You should also allow for local taxes, currency-conversion charges, and temporary authorization holds. The same applies to Pro+ and Max; use the final amount shown on the checkout page as the reference.

3. Which virtual cards can be considered?

GitHub does not publish a whitelist of virtual-card brands. The order below is based on card type, recurring-payment capability, and account-opening region; it is not a guarantee of payment success.

Cannot bypass regional restrictions; linked cards can still be rejected

Local-bank virtual credit card

If a bank in your country or region offers a virtual Visa or Mastercard credit card and allows international online transactions, this is usually the simplest option.

These cards typically have clearer cardholder data, billing addresses, and credit-card status, and recurring billing is often more stable than with prepaid cards. If 3DS verification is required, it can usually be completed through the bank’s app or SMS.

Before use, check international payments, online payments, card-not-present payments, and recurring-payment permissions in the banking app. If a GitHub transaction is blocked by the bank, contact the issuer first to ask for the reason rather than repeatedly resubmitting the payment.

Wise Digital Card

Wise’s digital card can be used for online purchases, and its debit card supports viewing and managing subscription charges.

Personal Wise Card availability currently mainly covers residents of Australia, Brazil, Canada, the European Economic Area, Switzerland, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and parts of the United States. Refer to Wise’s regional availability documentation for the complete list.

If you already legally hold a Wise account, the digital card can be convenient for paying for Copilot. If you do not live in a supported region, do not submit a false address merely to obtain a card. Wise may request identity or address verification again during an account review.

Standard Revolut virtual card

Revolut offers both multi-use virtual cards and disposable virtual cards.

For a Copilot subscription, use a standard Multi-use virtual card. Disposable or Single-use cards change the card number after a transaction and are unsuitable for auto-renewal and later preauthorizations.

Another easily overlooked issue is the card type. Revolut products are not identical across countries. Some are debit cards, while terms for products in places such as the United States may also refer to prepaid cards. The final reference should be the card information in your own app and the agreement that applies in your jurisdiction.

A Revolut card that works for ordinary online shopping does not necessarily meet GitHub’s usage-based billing requirements.

Bybit Card: consider both region and card type

Bybit Card may suit users who legally hold a Bybit account and want to pay subscriptions from fiat or crypto balances. However, Bybit issues different card types in different regions, so the brand name alone is not enough.

According to Bybit’s Card FAQ updated in July 2026:

Card program

Card type

AIFC, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Australia, Mexico

Mastercard credit card

Asia Pacific

Visa credit card

Argentina

Mastercard prepaid card

Brazil, Peru

Visa prepaid card

Because GitHub does not accept prepaid cards for usage-based billing, the Bybit prepaid programs in Argentina, Brazil, and Peru are not good first choices for Copilot.

Even with a credit-card program, transactions can still be affected by BIN, billing address, account region, and payment risk controls. Bybit also lists mainland China, Hong Kong, the United States, Singapore, Canada, and other regions as restricted-service areas. Check the latest restriction notice before applying, and do not borrow another person’s identity or fabricate an address.

PayPal: useful as a backup, but it cannot bypass restrictions

GitHub individual non-managed accounts can select PayPal in supported regions.

The advantage of PayPal is that users do not need to submit card details directly to the merchant every time. However, PayPal still checks the account region, linked card, and transaction risk. If the linked card does not support international subscriptions, or the PayPal account region conflicts with the user’s information, payment can still fail.

It is a backup payment route, not a way to bypass card-type or regional restrictions.

4. Steps for subscribing to Copilot with a virtual card

  1. Sign in to GitHub, open the Copilot plan page, and choose Pro, Pro+, or Max.

  2. Decide whether to enable usage beyond the included plan allowance. For a first subscription, you can leave it disabled and set a budget later if you actually need it.

  3. Open the issuer’s app, check online-payment, international-transaction, and recurring-charge permissions, and be ready to complete 3DS, SMS, or app verification.

  4. Enter the cardholder name and billing address exactly as registered with the issuer. Do not guess the country, state/province, city, or postal code.

  5. Enter the card number, expiration date, and CVV, then submit the payment.

  6. If a temporary preauthorization appears, complete the verification in the issuer’s app and then return to GitHub to continue.

  7. Complete the final Activate Copilot step. Successful payment-method verification does not mean the plan has automatically been activated; if this step is missed, the account may still show Free.

  8. Go to Settings → Billing & licensing and check the current plan, payment method, and next billing date.

For the full process, see GitHub’s Getting started with a GitHub Copilot plan.

5. How to troubleshoot a failed virtual-card payment

Repeatedly submitting the same card usually does not help. Read the exact message first, then decide whether to change cards or contact the issuer.

The card is reported as unsupported

First confirm whether the card is Prepaid, a Gift Card, or a Single-use Card.

If it is one of these types, adding more balance or repeatedly changing the address usually will not change the outcome. Use a non-prepaid bank credit card, an eligible debit card, or PayPal in a supported region instead.

Verification is complete, but Copilot still shows Free

First confirm that the final Activate Copilot step was completed, then check the plan status under Billing & licensing.

If payment verification succeeded but the plan was not activated, review the checkout flow again. If it still does not take effect, contact GitHub Support.

“Declined” or “Do not honor” appears

These messages usually come from the issuer or payment-processing system. Check, in order:

  • Whether online, international, and recurring payments are enabled;

  • Whether the balance can cover the plan, taxes, and temporary authorization;

  • Whether 3DS, SMS, or app verification timed out;

  • Whether the issuer restricts overseas software subscriptions;

  • Whether the billing address matches the issuer’s records.

If the issuer’s app shows no trace of the transaction, the merchant or acquirer may have rejected the card before sending an authorization request. If a decline record is visible, contact the issuer first and ask for the original decline reason.

The first month works, but renewal fails

Common causes include insufficient balance, a frozen card, a changed virtual-card number, or disabled recurring-payment permissions.

After the first payment, the issuer may also reassess this type of transaction. Do not frequently delete or recreate the subscription card. Keep enough balance before renewal and make sure the verification phone number and issuer app remain usable.

The fixed monthly fee succeeds, but additional-usage charges fail

The fixed subscription fee and additional AI Credits usage may follow different verification flows. Prepaid cards are particularly prone to a situation where the monthly fee succeeds but usage-based billing fails.

If you do not want additional charges, turn off Additional Usage. If you genuinely need more usage, switch to a non-prepaid payment method that meets GitHub’s billing requirements.

GitHub’s recommended sequence for payment-method problems is to re-add the payment method, try another payment method, and contact support if the problem persists. See GitHub’s payment-information management documentation for details.

6. How to control additional AI Credits charges

Copilot personal plans after 2026 may incur additional AI Credits charges on top of the fixed monthly fee.

Trying to control spending simply by “keeping less money on the card” is not ideal. Insufficient balance can interfere with normal renewal and can also cause abnormal payment status.

A better approach is to use GitHub’s budget tools directly:

  1. Disable additional usage when first activating the plan;

  2. When more usage is needed, go to Billing & licensing → Budgets and alerts;

  3. Set a Copilot AI Credits budget;

  4. If the page offers a hard-stop option, enable Stop usage when budget limit is reached;

  5. Enable budget alerts at 75%, 90%, and 100%;

  6. Regularly review payment history and AI Credits usage.

GitHub’s budget documentation explains that only enabling the stop option will prevent further charges after the budget ceiling is reached. Email alerts alone do not automatically stop usage.

7. What should users in mainland China and Hong Kong choose?

For users in mainland China and Hong Kong, the main difficulty is usually not that the GitHub account cannot subscribe, but that relatively few virtual cards can be obtained compliantly while also meeting GitHub’s requirements.

At present:

  • Wise does not offer Wise Card to individual residents of mainland China or Hong Kong;

  • Revolut’s personal-account availability does not include mainland China or Hong Kong;

  • Bybit lists mainland China and Hong Kong as restricted-service regions.

In these regions, prioritize a local-bank Visa or Mastercard credit card in your own name that permits international online subscriptions. Where both GitHub and PayPal are supported, you can also try a PayPal account that you legitimately use yourself.

If you study, work, or live overseas long-term, you can apply for a bank or fintech card using your genuine local identity and address.

Do not buy shared cards, card-binding services, or temporary card numbers, and do not allow an unknown seller to log in to your GitHub account to pay on your behalf. A GitHub account may be linked to private code repositories, organization permissions, and development history; if the account is taken over, the loss can be far greater than the subscription fee.

8. Frequently asked questions

Does GitHub Copilot support virtual cards?

Yes, if the virtual card meets the requirements.

GitHub cares about whether the payment method passes verification, not whether the card has a physical form. A non-prepaid virtual credit or debit card that supports recurring charges and has a genuine billing address is more suitable.

Can a crypto card pay for GitHub Copilot?

It depends on the card’s actual type on the payment network.

If it is identified as prepaid, it is not suitable for AI Credits usage billing under GitHub’s current rules. Credit-card programs must also satisfy account-opening region, KYC, billing-address, and payment-risk requirements.

Can a single-use virtual card be used for a subscription?

Not recommended.

A single-use card number usually cannot handle next month’s automatic renewal or subsequent preauthorizations. A successful first payment does not mean the subscription can be maintained long-term.

Is $10 on the card enough for Copilot Pro?

Not reliably.

In addition to the $10 monthly fee, local taxes, currency-conversion charges, and temporary authorization holds may apply. Keep some extra balance based on the final amount shown at checkout.

Is PayPal more likely to work?

Not necessarily.

GitHub supports PayPal for individual non-managed accounts, but PayPal still checks the account region, linked card, and transaction risk. It can be used as a backup payment method, but it cannot bypass regional or card restrictions.

Will a failed payment get my GitHub account banned?

A normal single decline usually only causes the transaction to fail.

However, repeatedly using multiple abnormal cards, entering false billing information, or generating disputed payments may increase account and payment risk scores. After a failure, stop repeated attempts, verify the card status first, and contact GitHub Support if necessary.

For GitHub Copilot, you can consider payment methods in this order:

  1. A bank-issued virtual credit card in your own name;

  2. A compliant, non-prepaid digital debit card that supports subscriptions;

  3. A crypto-payment-card credit program that meets regional requirements;

  4. PayPal as a backup in supported regions.

When choosing a card, confirm the card type first, then check recurring-payment support, billing address, and regional eligibility.

For Copilot, a successful first payment is not enough. Whether the card can complete automatic renewals and handle additional AI Credits usage is the real standard for judging whether it is suitable for long-term use.
