Nium Stablecoin-backed Cards

Updated: Aug 8, 2026

Nium Stablecoin-backed Cards is an enterprise stablecoin card issuance platform introduced by Nium on March 30, 2026, rather than a Nium-branded retail card that individuals can apply for directly. Crypto exchanges, fintech companies, digital banks, marketplaces, and enterprises can issue white-label Visa or Mastercard cards through a single API. When cardholders make payments, stablecoin balances are converted into fiat currency in the background, while merchants receive payment as a standard bank card transaction. The product is currently in enterprise early access and is primarily confirmed to support USDC.

Card overview

Nium Stablecoin-backed Cards connect stablecoin balances to traditional card payment networks. Partner businesses can embed card functions in their own applications, enabling users, employees, contractors, or suppliers to spend stablecoin balances. When a transaction occurs, Nium handles the real-time conversion from stablecoins to fiat, authorisation, and settlement, so merchants do not need to accept or hold cryptocurrency. The platform connects to both Visa and Mastercard and can be used for corporate expense management, employee travel, supplier payments, SaaS subscriptions, and spending platform balances. Nium's general card-issuing infrastructure supports virtual cards, physical cards, spending restrictions, merchant-category controls, and digital wallets. However, the specific card design, fees, limits, card form, and user eligibility depend on the partner business, issuing region, and card network approval. The product currently accepts corporate applications through “Get early access” and does not provide a direct account-opening or application channel for individuals.

Significant Time, Significant Cost, No Successful Launch

My experience with Nium was disappointing and ultimately very costly. My company spent more than a year integrating with Nium's platform. During that time, we encountered repeated onboarding delays, technical issues, inconsistencies between testing and production environments, documentation challenges, and extended response times. Despite continued engagement with Nium's technical and management teams, we continued development in reliance on the relationship and invested significant time and money into the integration. In October 2025, Nium suspended and then terminated our access to its platform. We subsequently filed an arbitration claim seeking recovery of approximately $70,000 in documented development and integration costs. After a lengthy arbitration process, the arbitrator ruled in Nium's favor on the contract claims, and I respect the outcome even though I disagree with it. However, there are a few facts that prospective customers should know: • Nium sought approximately $40,000 in attorney's fees from us during the arbitration. • The arbitrator denied Nium's request for attorney's fees in its entirety. • The arbitrator specifically found that we did not act in bad faith in bringing the case. My takeaway is that prospective customers should carefully evaluate Nium's technical readiness, onboarding process, responsiveness, documentation quality, and long-term commitment to the relationship before investing significant development resources. Based on my experience, substantial time, effort, and expense can be incurred before a platform is fully operational, and businesses should ensure they are comfortable with that risk before proceeding. This was my experience. Others may have different experiences.

Horrible Customer Experience

Relay recently switched to using NIUM as its partner for international payments. NIUM has taken over 2 months to review business applications to receive international payments on its platform. In that time, countless businesses like mine have been unable to invoice their international clients. I went into this year with my main source of revenue being a contract with a UK-based client. I haven't been able to invoice them for 3.5 months' worth of work. That's thousands and thousands of dollars in backed-up revenue, directly impacting my small business's liquidity and threatening its viabiliity. I don't have direct contact with NIUM, but if this is how they handle an integration with a major business opportunity like international payments for Relay, I can't imagine how they handle one-off issues. I'd give negative stars if I could.

Truffa

Truffa !
