Card overview
BitPay Card uses a prepaid model in which assets are converted before spending. When users initiate a top-up from a self-custody crypto wallet, the crypto assets are sold at the real-time exchange rate and converted into USD, which is then deposited into a separate card account. Merchant purchases and ATM withdrawals directly debit the USD balance, without continuing to hold or transfer crypto assets at the time of payment. The active version offered both an instant virtual card and a mailed physical card for online shopping, in-store purchases, mobile wallets, and cash withdrawals, and previously provided automatic cashback calculated at participating merchants. The current card program is not accepting applications, and the official website retains only a waitlist notice. The latest BitPay prepaid card agreement registered with the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has also been marked as withdrawn.

Notice: In June 2023, Metropolitan Commercial Bank, the original partner card-issuing bank, announced its complete withdrawal from all cryptocurrency-related banking partnerships. BitPay subsequently suspended all new card applications. BitPay stated that it was restructuring and improving its cryptocurrency debit card programme. The official page has switched to a waitlist, and users can only provide their email address to await notification that applications have reopened.
