Services such as ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney, Netflix, Spotify, and Adobe typically charge automatically on a monthly or annual basis. In addition to supporting international online transactions, a card must also be able to handle recurring billing, 3D Secure, small pre-authorizations, and refunds.
A successful first payment does not mean that renewals will continue to work smoothly every month. For long-term subscriptions, the key question is not simply whether the card can make a payment, but whether it can reliably process subsequent recurring charges.
Wirex Card, Bybit Card, MetaMask Card, RedotPay, and Gnosis Pay Card are among the main products currently worth comparing.
Wirex Card
Wirex Card is suitable for users with multiple subscriptions who want to use one card consistently over the long term.
It works similarly to a traditional debit card, allowing users to manage both fiat currencies and crypto assets, and it can be used for subscription services such as ChatGPT Plus, Uber One, and Bloomberg.
Wirex has a relatively complete card ecosystem, with virtual cards, physical cards, and mobile wallets that can be used together. As long as sufficient funds are maintained in the account, it is well suited to recurring charges.
However, eligibility, fees, and card rules vary by region. After replacing a card or when a card expires, payment details for existing subscriptions usually need to be updated.
Bybit Card
Bybit Card is suitable for users who already hold assets on Bybit and need to pay for software, streaming services, and other online services.
Once the virtual card is activated, it can be used directly for subscriptions without waiting for a physical card. The card balance is linked to funds in the Bybit account, making it relatively easy to replenish spending funds.
It is particularly suitable for users who already use Bybit. To avoid failed renewals, users should make sure there is enough available balance in the account before the billing date.
Bybit Card may use different issuing programs in different regions, so fees, limits, and supported services may vary. The actual rules should be based on the information displayed in the user's account.
MetaMask Card
MetaMask Card is suitable for users who want to pay for subscriptions directly with assets held in a self-custody wallet.
Payments can be settled using supported assets in the MetaMask wallet without first transferring funds to a centralized exchange. For long-term MetaMask users, this can be a more convenient payment method.
However, MetaMask Card is available only in selected regions, and the supported assets and networks may also differ by region.
Refunds may not necessarily return directly to the original on-chain balance. In some cases, funds may first return to the card balance and then be spent by the user or transferred back to the wallet. Users who frequently cancel subscriptions or handle refunds should understand the full process in advance.
RedotPay
RedotPay is suitable for ordinary software, streaming, and membership subscriptions.
Once the virtual card is activated, it can be linked immediately, and the setup process is relatively straightforward. It works well for lower-value services billed monthly.
One important point to note is that freezing, deleting, or disabling the card does not mean the subscription has been canceled.
Merchants may continue attempting to charge the card, although the transactions will fail. Some failed transactions may also incur fees. Therefore, when a service is no longer needed, the subscription should be canceled directly through the merchant rather than simply freezing the card.
If the card is going to be deleted or replaced, users should also make sure that any refunds have been received and subscriptions have been canceled first.
Gnosis Pay Card
Gnosis Pay Card is better suited to users who value self-custody and payment verification capabilities.
It supports Visa 3D Secure. When an online transaction requires additional verification, users can confirm it using a verification code.
This is particularly important for European merchants, software services, cloud services, and some subscription platforms with stricter risk controls. Some virtual cards can process small payments but fail at the 3D Secure stage.
The main limitation of Gnosis Pay is regional eligibility. It is currently mainly available in selected countries in Europe and Latin America. Users who meet the regional and identity requirements can consider it as a stablecoin subscription card.
Which Cards Are Not Suitable for Long-Term Subscriptions?
Single-use virtual cards are generally unsuitable.
These cards are designed for one-time use. After payment, the card number may become invalid and cannot process subsequent automatic charges.
Virtual cards that frequently change numbers, have very short validity periods, or are closed after use are also unsuitable for long-term subscriptions. The first payment may work, but by the next renewal the original card may no longer be usable.
What Should You Look for in a Subscription Card?
When choosing a card for international subscriptions, focus on the following:
Do not look only at whether the first payment succeeds.
Whether a card is suitable for subscriptions depends on whether it can process recurring charges reliably for several consecutive months, not whether it occasionally succeeds once.
Why Does the First Payment Succeed but Later Renewals Fail?
The most common reason is insufficient balance.
Subscription services sometimes perform a small verification charge first, and the actual amount charged may also be slightly higher than the listed price because of exchange-rate changes. If the card balance is kept at only exactly enough to cover the subscription price, renewals can easily fail.
Other common reasons include:
When canceling a service, cancel it directly from the merchant account. Freezing the card can block some charges, but it does not replace canceling the subscription.
Which Card Is More Suitable for You?
If you already use Wirex and want to manage multiple subscriptions with one card, Wirex Card is worth considering first.
If you mainly hold assets on Bybit and need a virtual card that is easy to top up, consider Bybit Card.
If you want to pay directly from a self-custody wallet, consider MetaMask Card.
For ordinary software, streaming services, and low-value memberships, RedotPay offers a more straightforward setup.
If 3D Secure is important and you meet the application requirements for Europe or Latin America, compare Gnosis Pay Card.
Payment rules vary between merchants. A card that works for Netflix may not necessarily work for ChatGPT; a card that works for ordinary software does not mean it will also work for advertising platforms, cloud services, or hotel bookings.
