When choosing a card for international travel, the most important question is not simply whether the card works, but whether using it for purchases, currency conversion, ATM withdrawals, and refunds will generate additional costs.

Many crypto payment cards can be used at Visa or Mastercard merchants, but the differences become much more noticeable in real travel scenarios. Some cards are better suited to everyday purchases, some are more practical for ATM withdrawals, while others are best used only as backup cards in a mobile wallet.

Crypto payment cards currently worth considering for travel include Wirex Card, Gnosis Pay Card, Nexo Card, Crypto.com Card, and MetaMask Card.

Wirex Card

Wirex Card is relatively similar to a traditional multi-currency travel card and is better suited to users who make frequent everyday purchases and travel across multiple countries.

It can be used at a large number of Visa or Mastercard merchants, covering restaurants, transportation, shopping, and online bookings. Users in some regions also receive a certain amount of fee-free ATM withdrawals each month, with fees charged after the allowance is exceeded.

Wirex's advantage is its broad range of use cases: it offers a physical card and also supports mobile wallets. However, card versions, fee-free withdrawal allowances, and fees may differ by region, and ATM operators may charge their own fees.

For travelers who make frequent card payments and occasionally need cash withdrawals, Wirex Card is a relatively balanced option.

Gnosis Pay Card

Gnosis Pay Card is better suited to users who care about foreign exchange costs and primarily hold stablecoins.

The card itself does not charge an additional transaction fee for ordinary card purchases, and international purchases are generally converted using Visa exchange rates. When paying, choosing the local currency is usually more cost-effective than allowing the merchant to convert the transaction directly into Chinese yuan or U.S. dollars.

For ATM withdrawals, Gnosis Pay provides a certain number and amount of fee-free withdrawals each month, with percentage-based fees applied after the allowance is exceeded.

The card's fee structure is relatively clear, but application availability is limited, mainly to selected countries in Europe and Latin America. Eligibility depends on legal residence and identity verification.

Nexo Card

Nexo Card is better suited to users who already use Nexo.

It works at Mastercard merchants, supports Apple Pay and Google Pay, and also provides a certain fee-free ATM withdrawal allowance. Users can switch between different spending modes according to their account settings.

A key point to note is that Nexo's foreign exchange fees can vary depending on the user's region, membership tier, and transaction timing. Fees may be lower on weekdays in some regions, while weekend fees or fees in other regions may be significantly higher.

If you are considering applying only for international travel, it is better to first calculate your own FX fees, withdrawal limits, and account tier. For users who already hold assets with Nexo and have an established membership tier, the card may provide more value.

Crypto.com Card

Whether Crypto.com Card is suitable for travel mainly depends on the card tier and issuing region.

Fee-free ATM withdrawal limits, foreign exchange fees, and travel benefits differ significantly between tiers. Entry-level tiers may not offer a clear advantage for international spending, while higher tiers generally provide higher withdrawal limits and better travel benefits.

The issue is that these benefits are often linked to account tier, asset holdings, or lock-up requirements. Committing a large amount of additional funds solely to obtain travel benefits may not be cost-effective.

Existing Crypto.com users can assess travel suitability based on their current tier. If the only goal is to use the card abroad, it is not advisable to focus solely on cashback or card design.

MetaMask Card

MetaMask Card is better suited to online bookings, mobile payments, and backup use.

It can directly use digital assets held in the wallet and complete online and in-store payments through Apple Pay or Google Pay. It is convenient for hotel bookings, flights, in-app payments, and everyday small-value purchases.

However, new users currently mainly receive a virtual card. Users who frequently need ATMs, physical cards, or travel to areas with weak mobile payment coverage should not rely on it as their only travel card.

MetaMask Card is better used as a supplementary card in a mobile wallet rather than as the sole solution for all travel payments.

For International Travel, Look at Fees First

Many people look at cashback first when choosing a card, but foreign exchange costs are often more important when traveling.

Even if a card offers 1% or 2% cashback, it may provide little real saving if international purchases incur an equal or higher foreign exchange fee.

Costs that should be calculated together include:

  • Foreign exchange conversion fees;
  • Crypto asset conversion spreads;
  • International transaction fees;
  • Weekend surcharges;
  • ATM withdrawal fees;
  • ATM operator fees;
  • Top-up and refund fees.

A card being advertised as offering “free withdrawals” does not mean there is no cost at all. Some cards only waive platform fees within a fixed number or amount of withdrawals, while the ATM operator may still charge a fee.

Hotels and Car Rentals Need Separate Consideration

Hotels and car rental companies usually place a deposit hold on the card, and the amount may be higher than the actual final charge.

Some prepaid cards, virtual cards, or cards with low available balances may not be able to complete the pre-authorization. Even when the pre-authorization succeeds, releasing the deposit may take several days or longer.

Therefore, do not travel with only one crypto payment card. A more reliable setup is to:

  • Use a crypto payment card for everyday spending;
  • Use Apple Pay or Google Pay for small payments;
  • Carry a traditional credit card for hotels and car rentals;
  • Keep a small amount of local cash;
  • Carry an additional independent backup card.

This way, if one card is temporarily frozen, cannot be used for ATM withdrawals, or a payment fails, the entire trip will not be disrupted.

Choose the Local Currency When Paying Abroad

When paying or withdrawing cash abroad, a terminal may sometimes ask whether you want to settle the transaction in Chinese yuan, U.S. dollars, or the local currency.

In most cases, choose the local currency and let Visa, Mastercard, or the card issuer perform the conversion. Choosing Chinese yuan or U.S. dollars may trigger dynamic currency conversion offered by the merchant, which often uses a less favorable exchange rate.

Before confirming a payment, check the currency shown on the terminal rather than looking only at the amount.

Which Card Is More Suitable for You?

If you travel internationally frequently and need both everyday card spending and ATM withdrawals, Wirex Card is worth comparing closely.

If you mainly hold stablecoins and want to reduce additional foreign exchange costs, Gnosis Pay Card is worth considering.

If you already use Nexo or Crypto.com, first check the FX fees, withdrawal limits, and travel benefits associated with your current tier.

If your main use cases are online bookings, mobile payments, or a backup card, MetaMask Card may be more suitable.

No single card can simultaneously offer the broadest application coverage, the lowest fees, the highest ATM withdrawal limits, and the lowest risk. The right choice should depend on your destination, spending currency, length of travel, and cash withdrawal needs rather than simply whether a card is marketed as “globally available.”
