Crypto payment cards can be used for in-store purchases in two main ways.
The first is to use a physical card directly, including inserting the card, entering a PIN, and making contactless payments. The second is to add a virtual card to Apple Pay or Google Pay and pay by holding a phone near a POS terminal.
The two methods may look similar, but they work differently. A physical card can be used directly at a merchant terminal, while a virtual card must first be linked to a mobile wallet. If a card is available only as a virtual card and does not support Apple Pay or Google Pay, it cannot be used for in-store POS purchases.
Bybit Card, Wirex Card, Gnosis Pay Card, RedotPay, Nexo Card, Crypto.com Card, and MetaMask Card are among the more common options.
Bybit Card
The physical Bybit Card can be used directly for in-store POS payments and supports chip insertion, PIN verification, and contactless payments.
When you first receive the physical card, you usually need to complete one chip-and-PIN transaction before contactless payments can be used normally.
Users who only have a virtual card can also try adding Bybit Card to Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay to make in-store payments with their phone.
Bybit Card is suitable for users who already hold assets on the platform and need both online and in-store payment options. Card programs may differ by region, so mobile wallet support should be confirmed based on what is shown in your account.
Wirex Card
Wirex Card works much like a traditional bank card.
The physical card can be used directly at POS terminals and supports chip insertion, PIN, and contactless payments. Wirex also provides virtual cards, with Apple Pay or Google Pay supported in some regions.
It can cover online purchases, in-store payments, and ATM use, making it suitable for users who spend frequently in everyday situations.
However, Wirex may use different card networks and issuing institutions in different countries. Mobile wallet compatibility, spending limits, and fee rules should not be judged solely from the experiences of users in other regions.
Gnosis Pay Card
Gnosis Pay Card can be used at physical merchants that accept Visa.
Users can either use the physical card or add the card to Apple Pay or Google Wallet for contactless payments by phone.
It is suitable for users who primarily hold stablecoins and want to spend them directly in everyday offline situations. The main limitation is regional eligibility, as applications are currently open only in certain countries in Europe and Latin America.
If your location is outside the supported area, you cannot normally apply even though the card itself supports POS payments.
RedotPay
The physical RedotPay card can be used at in-store POS terminals and also supports ATM withdrawals.
Users with only a virtual card can try linking it to Apple Pay or Google Pay and then pay with their phone.
Its virtual and physical card usage flows are relatively straightforward, and it covers common spending scenarios fairly well. However, mobile wallet support varies by region. Even if the card can be added successfully, that does not mean POS terminals in every country will work with it.
Nexo Card
Nexo Card supports physical card payments and contactless payments and can also be added to Apple Pay or Google Wallet.
It is not exactly the same as a standard prepaid card. Users can choose different spending modes in their account. The POS terminal only processes the payment; which assets or credit line are actually charged is determined by the settings in the Nexo account.
Nexo Card is better suited to users who already use Nexo. If you are applying only for in-store spending, first check regional eligibility, membership tier, and applicable fees.
Crypto.com Card
The physical Crypto.com Card can be used directly at supported physical merchants.
The virtual card itself cannot be used directly at a standard POS terminal, but in some regions it can be added to Apple Pay or Google Pay and then used for payments by phone.
Crypto.com Card varies significantly by region. Card types, limits, and mobile wallet support are not exactly the same in the United States, Europe, and other markets.
Existing Crypto.com users can first check whether their current tier and region support mobile payments. The brand name alone is not enough to determine whether a specific card can be used in-store.
MetaMask Card
MetaMask Card is currently better suited to in-store payments through a mobile wallet.
The virtual card can be added to Apple Pay or Google Pay and used at merchants that support contactless payments. MetaMask previously offered a metal physical card, but new orders have been paused. For most new users, it functions more like a payment card stored in a mobile wallet than a traditional physical card.
If you frequently shop at smaller merchants that do not support mobile payments, MetaMask Card is not suitable as your only in-store payment method.
Physical card or virtual card: which should you choose?
If you frequently make in-store purchases, a physical card is generally more reliable.
Even if a merchant does not support mobile wallets, you can usually still insert or swipe the card as long as the merchant accepts the relevant Visa or Mastercard network.
Virtual cards are more convenient and can be linked to a phone immediately after activation, but they depend on three conditions:
- The card supports Apple Pay or Google Pay
- The corresponding mobile wallet is available in the user's region
- The merchant's POS terminal supports NFC contactless payments
If any one of these conditions is not met, the virtual card cannot be used for in-store purchases.
Why can contactless payments fail?
A failed contactless payment does not necessarily mean the card cannot be used.
Common reasons include:
- The physical card has not yet completed its first chip verification
- The card has not been activated
- The POS terminal does not support contactless payments
- After several consecutive contactless transactions, the card must be inserted again and the PIN entered
- The transaction exceeds the contactless payment limit
- The card balance is insufficient
- The account or card has been frozen
- The card in the mobile wallet needs to be verified again
- The merchant category is restricted by the card issuer
If a contactless payment fails, first try inserting the card and entering the PIN. If the inserted-card transaction also fails, check the balance, card status, and spending limits.
Avoid repeatedly attempting payments within a short period, as multiple failed transactions may trigger additional risk controls.
POS support does not mean the card will work everywhere
A card marked as supporting in-store POS only means it can be used at eligible bank-card terminals. It does not mean every merchant will accept it.
Payments may still fail in situations such as:
- The merchant accepts only domestic bank cards
- Vending machines or transit terminals do not accept prepaid cards
- Hotels and car rental companies require a large pre-authorization
- The merchant's industry is restricted by the card issuer
- The terminal has a network problem
- The card's issuing region and the spending location trigger risk controls
When traveling abroad or attending an important event, it is not advisable to rely on only one crypto payment card. Keep at least one traditional bank card or another backup payment method.
What should you check when choosing a card for in-store spending?
Besides POS support, it is also worth checking:
- Whether a physical card is available
- Physical card application and delivery fees
- Whether chip insertion, PIN, and contactless payments are supported
- Whether Apple Pay or Google Pay is supported
- Transaction fees and foreign exchange fees
- Crypto conversion costs
- Per-transaction, daily, and monthly limits
- Whether refunds and transaction reversals are supported
- Whether the card can be frozen immediately if lost
- Whether the replacement-card process is clear
- Whether customer support can handle transaction disputes
For frequent in-store spending, you may compare products that offer physical cards, such as Bybit Card, Wirex Card, Gnosis Pay Card, RedotPay, and Nexo Card.
If you mainly live in a city with broad mobile-payment coverage, MetaMask Card or other virtual cards used with Apple Pay or Google Pay can usually meet everyday needs.
